Creation in Crisis - a time for prayer and action
Churches Together in Britain and Ireland has put together a programme of resources to encourage and assist churches to observe a Time for Creation in 2009, between 1 September and 4 October. Our theme for 2009 is Creation in Crisis - a time for prayer and action.
In preparation for the UN Climate Change Summit which will take place in Copenhagen in December 2009, the resources include material to enable churches, groups and individuals to focus on issues relating to the decisions which will need to be taken in Copenhagen.
The Summit in Copenhagen is being described by some as the "last chance for the planet". In the face of mounting evidence that we are heading for runaway climate change and massive losses in biodiversity, there is the need for an international treaty that would bind governments to drastic and immediate cuts in carbon emissions, but this would require courageous and far-sighted political leadership to transform our economy and many aspects of our culture.
More than ever, therefore, Christians are called to demonstrate their commitment to care for creation, by living simply and sustainably themselves, and by pressing politicians to take the measures necessary at national and international level.
As emphasised in the 2008 resources, this is undergirded by the hope we share as Christians, based ultimately in God's good plans for his creation, the cosmic scope of Christ's saving work, and the Spirit's renewing power at work within and through human beings.
The 2009 resources
Central to the resources are sermon notes, with a choice of two 5 week frameworks, one based on the Lectionary readings, the other linked specifically to the theme. It is possible either to follow the whole 5 weeks or to dip into the material and use it as required. The final "theme" sermon works particularly well as a stand alone Harvest resource.
Other items include a LOAF service which would be suitable for a Churches Together event, action ideas, additional prayers and liturgical material and discussion group ideas.
The material is available as free downloads. The sermon materials, LOAF service and discussion group ideas will be available in Welsh and Irish language versions, as well as in English.

Climate Change Day of Prayer
Alongside our 2009 Creation Time resources, we are making available materials for organising a local Climate Change Day of Prayer on 4 October, or another convenient nearby date. This initiative encourages people to take time out to stop, reflect on the issues, and pray together at this critical time in our history. The resources will enable churches or other groups to prepare for, promote and run a Climate Change Day of Prayer event and are all available as free downloads
Don't forget you can still make use of the 2008 resources too.
